Personal Leave

It has come to our attention that lately, HR is discouraging managers from approving CUPEU employees' notifications to take consecutive days for personal leave. After deliberating over the matter with CUPEU's CSN representative, the union disagrees with this HR interpretation and approach to article 28.06 in the Collective Agreement. Until recently, this has not been how the article has been used or interpreted. With the normal, prior 2-day notification, employees are entitled to personal leave; however, note that such leave cannot be used to prolong vacations or any other leave (except for bereavement leave).

Should you encounter a situation where your manager refuses consecutive personal leave, please let us know by emailing cupeu@concordia.ca. We are discussing this matter at our Labour Relations Committee meetings.

Vacation

As you know, the University has approved a 25 vacation-day carry over into 2022-23 (these may include some vacation days from 2020-21, as well).

If you have carry-over days as you take vacation in 2022-23, “older” days will be taken first; then, current vacation days will be used. Any and all carry over days from 2020-21 and 2021-22 must be taken by May 31, 2023.

We would like to remind you that our Collective agreement allows, with supervisor approval, deferring 10 days to the next year, and then another 10 days for up to two years. All carried over days must be taken in year three (Article 29.09).

Should you wish to carry over 10 days from 2022-23, into 2023-24, they would be vacation days from 2022-23 (all of the 25 from 2020-21 & 2021-22 must be used).

Special Announcement - Menstrual Equity Project

On behalf of the union, the CUPEU Executive is pleased to announce its support for Menstrual Equity project, a collaborative intiatative from the Concordia community.

Here's more information from CUPEU member and Health Services' Health Promotion Specialist, Gaby Szabo:

The Menstrual Equity Project aims to make period products free, accessible and sustainable at Concordia. The Project uses a three-pronged approach: empowerment, distribution, and advocacy. The Project is student-led: by the Concordia Zen Dens’ Peer Wellness Ambassadors and the Concordia Student Union. It is funded by students through a grant from the Sustainable Action Fund; and it receives support from Campus Wellness and Support Services, the Libraries, CUCCR, and many other internal and external groups – a true collaboration!

You may have already supported this project by participating in the group’s survey a few months ago. The survey explored Concordians’ practical need for just-in-time menstrual health products on-campus, and their interest in sustainable/reusable products. The finding that staff are engaged in the issue of menstrual equity has been particularly interesting, especially in light of Employment and Social Development Canada’s recent proposal to require employers to provide free menstrual products in their workplaces as an addition to the Canada Labour Code.

The students are in the next phase of their efforts. They have written an Advocacy Letter that they will submit to campus decision-makers. The letter was shared with Inter-Union Council: numerous Unions have already shown solidarity with the students by adding their logo to the letter: these include CUPEU, CUSSU, and TRAC.

As a Member who works with these students, I am grateful for CUPEU’s show of support; and I’m excited about the progress and forward momentum of this student-led project: it is leading to practical and useful changes on-campus!

New to your job? Welcome!

Congratulations on your unionized position. You're now part of a crucial organization that stands together to make sure Concordia University professionals have the safest, most sustainable work environment possible.
