Dear colleagues,

I want to thank all of you who took the time out of your busy lives to participate in our Special General Meeting (SGM) on Negotiations and Mobilizations on Tuesday June 6th. Your presence means a lot to us.

The Negotiations Project was presented and adopted at the Special General Meeting. We will not be releasing the details of the Negotiations Project in writing until we present it to the University. If you were unable to attend the SGM but are curious about the Negotiations Project, feel free to ask someone who attended the meeting. If you attend the CUPEU Summer BBQ this Tuesday, that would be a great opportunity to network and learn more about the negotiations project.

Although not directly related to the Negotiations Project, the SGM provided our members with a platform to voice their concerns about other important issues including job re-evaluations, compensation for employees stuck at step 10, career advancement and ensuring that positions get filled promptly.

With regards to job re-evaluation, the committee looking to replace the JEP system is still ongoing. Progress has been slow but the project shows promise. In the meantime, the process is covered by Article 40 and you do have the right to request your profile get re-evaluated. If you are not satisfied with the results of the re-evaluation, you can appeal the re-evaluation using clause 40.05. Make sure you notify the union if you choose to apply clause 40.05.

Concerning employees stuck at step 10 and career advancement, we plan on having ongoing internal discussions about these topics and will look into whether we can formulate a proposal for the next round of negotiations. If you applied for a promotion and did not get it. You do have the option of making an appeal. In this case make sure to notify the union, we have had some success in appealing those decisions.

With respect to getting jobs filled quickly, the current bureaucracy does cause significant delays. That being said, the union will look into whether we should enforce article 17 more actively to accelerate the process. We will also look into possible proposals for the next round of negotiations.

I hope you all have a pleasant summer!
Sincerely,
Sigmund Lam
VP of Negotiations
