We — Viviane Namaste (Professor, Simone de Beauvoir Institute) and Brigitte Boutet (Emergency Preparedness Manager, Campus Safety and Prevention Services) — are writing to provide information and resources regarding armed intruders on campus. This is a difficult issue related to workplace violence, and we believe that helping you stay prepared and aware is an important way to support you. Below you will find a brief overview of our ongoing work and resources available to you and your department. More information is available in the attached handout and in the workshops we offer.

Handout (PDF)

Please see the attached overview of a resource we distribute at our workshops. It introduces the Concordia Model for responding to armed intruders, which consists of three steps:
  1. Evaluate
  2. Respond (Run, Hide, or Fight)
  3. Support

Register for an Awareness Workshop

You can register for a 2-hour workshop that provides an overview of responding to armed intruders. Upcoming workshops are available online, and we also offer regular in-person sessions.

To register:
  1. Log into your My CU Account and navigate to:
Carrefour > Training > Employee Training > My Learning.
  2. Use the search bar to find Armed Intruder Awareness.
  3. On the course page, select View Available Classes.
  4. Choose a class.
  5. Register using the Register button.

Workshops in Your Department or Unit

We offer in-person workshops for staff and faculty to address these complex issues. You may discuss hosting a session with your Manager or Department Chair. We can come directly to your unit if there is enough interest.

Things You Can Do Proactively

  • Find out who the CERT (Concordia Emergency Response Team) members are in your department or on your floor. These individuals are trained to respond to emergencies. Ask your Department Administrator or Department Chair for this information.
  • Download the Rave Guardian app on your mobile device. This is the fastest way to receive emergency alerts when your safety may depend on it.

Further Resources
