Compensation for Education and Step Placement Errors: Grievances Settled
November 30, 2009
Last Friday morning, Adriana Volpato and Geoff Selig signed a letter of agreement resolving four grievances that disputed the accuracy of salary determinations and retroactivity calculations undertaken by the University in November 2005 shortly after the signing of the collective agreement that ran from June 1, 2002 to May 31, 2008. These grievances alleged that the University had incorrectly paid some professional employees. The types of errors envisioned by the grievances included incorrect initial step placement, incorrect calculation of  "history steps", incorrect annual step increases, failure to adjust stipends, and failure to recognize education that was above the minimum required for a given position.

HR Corrects error in calculating salary
November 25, 2008
About a month ago, the University corrected an error in the calculation of biweekly salary by adjusting some employees biweekly pay and by paying affected employees a retroactive sum equal to approximately 0.2% of their gross salary. For more information on the university adjustment and payout, click here. This error was discovered by Geoff Selig as part of the ongoing CUPEU salary and retroactivity verification exercise. The following is an overview of how CUPEU originally presented the situation to the University.

IITS vacation blackouts are over
July 22, 2008
For a number of years, IITS (Instructional and Information Technology Services) has imposed vacation "blackouts" during certain periods of the year. During these blackout periods, few vacation requests were accepted and even fewer were approved. In general, these blackout periods ran, in late summer, from the end of the third week in August to the end of the second week in September, and, in early winter, for the last week of work in December and the first two work-weeks in January.
CUPEU settles two major grievances
August 29, 2007
Yesterday afternoon, the University finally came to its senses and settled two important grievances. The case concerns a long-time temporary employee who went on maternity leave, returning a year later only to be told that she no longer had a job, her position had been given to someone else in her absence.
